Part time grazing where dairy cows are offered high pasture allowance during daytime has given good results compared with exercise pasture. We now want to study if even better results can be achieved with part-time grazing morning+evening or at night. Results have shown that automatically milked cows with daytime pasture avoid grazing daytime but are strongly motivated to graze in the morning and evening. In experiment 1, we will study a model with grazing 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. In experiment 2, we will study night time grazing with automatically milked (AM) cows, which has been requested by many farmers. We believe that night grazing will work well around midsummer. However, it is uncertain how the increasingly shorter days later in the season will affect animal performance. The objective is to develop the optimal systems for part time grazing on AM farms. Norwegian partner will finance a PhD student that will work in the project and cost of co-applicants.
