Bacterial infection in joints, or septic arthritis, is an important problem in foals because it leads to non-weight bearing lameness that affects the foal’s welfare and because survival after treatment can be as low as 42 %. The prognosis for coming to start in a race is also reduced. A study funded by the Equine Research Foundation in 2012 and earlier studies in pigs and chickens have shown that blood vessels in growth cartilage canals are involved in the pathogenesis. The first project aim is to investigate how the blood and lymphatic circulations are organised around the joints of growing foals, in order to determine which structures require treatment in septic arthritis. The second project aim is to examine recommended techniques for treatment and follow-up in order to determine which structures are reached with these techniques. The two aims will answer the overall aim of developing improved treatments with increased survival following septic arthritis in foals.

In nature, piglets are exposed to a wide range of bacteria that promote a balanced (healthy) gut microbiota. On the farm, routine cleaning can limit exposure to beneficial bacteria leading to an unbalanced gut microbiota. An unbalanced gut microbiota increases the risk of health problems and alters …
