Many horses in training show motion asymmetries, but it is not known if these are due to pain caused by training; or due to individual biological variations. The aim of this project is to initiate three cohort studies where changes in motion symmetry will be monitored over time in riding horses and trotters. The prevalence and degree of motion asymmetry will be studied in young horses before and after training is initiated and in adult riding horses competing on advanced level. The project will give us important information on when asymmetries arise and how they develop over time. If horses have mild motion asymmetries that do not change over time, with different types of training, this could indicate natural persistent asymmetries. The proposed study is also highly useful for future studies where detailed information on training and management may lead to identification of risk factors for development of orthopedic lesions and improve interpretation of clinical use of motion symmetry.

Slippery floors results in falls and injuries which can be fatal. Moreover, on dairy farms slippery floors impede oestrus behaviour and ease of heat detection and as result cause economical losses due to impaired fertility. Grooving is the most common way to treat concrete floors to reduce …

The most recent carbon footprint of Swedish pig production was presented in 2009, and no full LCA have been published in 15 years. In recent years major improvements have occurred in Swedish pig production and an updated environmental profile for Swedish pork is needed. The project will identify …

The aim of the project is to develop tools which can be used for individually adapted lactation lengths based on the biological conditions of the cow. Today a one year calving interval and a short lactation period, is recommended. The recommendations are based on 30 years old information and do not …

The aim of the project is to study effects of LED-light on milk production and activity in dairy cows. The main hypotheses are that LED light allows maintained cow activity and milk production with less energy used for illumination, and that LED-light makes it possible to apply a dark period during …

The role of liming in the crop rotation remains to be thoroughly investigated. Within two recent SLF projects, yield in sugar beet, barley and oil seed rape has been measured in the first rotation. In 2018, beets will be grown for a second time which gives us unique possibilities with the aim to …

During recent decades the area with brushwood has increased in the Swedish rural landscape. A study has shown that the annual harvest of brushwood for fuel purposes could amount to about 6 TWh. Some advantages with the utilization of brushwood as fuel are that the growth areas do not compete with …

Disease and production disturbances in a herd are often silent, and may cause major losses if they remain undetected. Continuous analysis and monitoring of data already recorded at the farm level can improve profitability. This project will develop methods for monitoring trends in production and …
