We are currently evaluating the effectiveness of grass buffer strips (GBS-eff) for nutrient retention. Today, there are no obligations to cut or remove the grass on GBS which may lead to phosphorus (P) saturation. In the on-going field experiments we are testing if removal (harvesting) the grass can reduce soil P enrichment in GBS and improve and even-out water infiltration, in order to advance sediment and P retention. The ongoing project produces data for 2 years but since weather conditions are highly variable between years more data and evaluations are needed to facilitate good decision-making and calculations of cost-efficiency. In addition, GBS-eff is highly dependent on management of the upstream field. In this new project we will evaluate GBS-eff when the field is fertilized with slurry, which currently is applied to 25 % of Swedish arable soils.

Bacterial infection in joints, or septic arthritis, is an important problem in foals because it leads to non-weight bearing lameness that affects the foal’s welfare and because survival after treatment can be as low as 42 %. The prognosis for coming to start in a race is also reduced. A study …

Insulin resistance and obesity are common in humans and horses. There is a strong correlation between insulin resistance and laminitis in horses but the pathogenesis of laminitis is not known. One hypothesis is that the development of laminitis is related to an insulin induced dysfunction of the …

The aim of the proposed project is to examine whether recovery after competition in horses is affected by housing system. Our hypothesis is that horses kept in a housing system where they can move freely in groups recover faster than horses kept in box stalls. We performed such a study in 2015 and, …
