The goal of this interdisciplinary research project is to contribute with knowledge to a sustainable development of organic broiler production in Sweden. With the starting point in current conditions, the project aims to analyse and manage future challenges for organic broiler producers. The aim in step 1 of the project is to map genotype by environment interactions in organic productions environments relevant under current conditions (KRAVs regulations). We want to assess interactions for broiler traits of high importance for productivity, animal welfare (incl. animal health) and environmental load. In step 2 of the project we look into the future and with the results of step1 and the principles for organic production (IFOAMs basic principles) as a basis, we will develop and evaluate a future production system. In this project we will evaluate both fast and slow growing broiler hybrids, as well as a dual-purpose breed (with potential for egg and meat production).
