Swedish farmers, advisors, authorities and researchers are working together towards the same goal of Zero Eutrophication by reducing losses of nutrients and sediment from agricultural land to streams, lakes and the Baltic Sea. The Focus on Phosphorus project was carried out to test measures of reducing phosphorus losses from agriculture. Farmers participated voluntarily. However, there has been no financial support for a follow-up programme to evaluate the long-term effects on water quality. This project aims to be the first comprehensive evaluation in Sweden of the effectiveness of the chain of phosphorus and sediment mitigation measures at reach and catchment scale. We will use hourly sampling and modelling to show the effect of measures in the Focus on Phosphorus catchment. Through this we aim to increase the awareness and use of the mitigation measures by Swedish farmers and move a step closer towards environmentally friendly Swedish agriculture in the long-term.
