Pneumonia is the most prevalent disease in Swedish feedlot cattle herds, causing mortality as well as affecting weight gain, rearing time and economy. Viral infections, including bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine coronavirus (BCV) as major actors, cause respiratory disease. Treatment of many calves with antibiotics for secondary bacterial pneumonia conveys a risk to develop resistance to antibiotics. We are convinced that recruitment of calves purely from BRSV/BCV-free dairy herds would increase calf health dramatically. Today calves are often mingled from various herds and run a high risk of disease. The studies are conducted in commercial feedlot herds during three years, assessing prevalence of infections, weight gain, disease incidence, motrality, treatments and abattoir registrations. Herds introducing calves only from BRSV/BCV-free dairy herds will be compared with conventionally mixed calf groups and health effects evaluated economically.

Poor oxygenation of blood that occurs when a horse is anesthetized and placed on its back is a critical risk factor for anesthetic complications, and the risk of complications from low oxygen continues into anesthetic recovery. When nitric oxide (NO) is delivered as a pulse in the beginning of the …

Insulin resistance and obesity are common in humans and horses. There is a strong correlation between insulin resistance and laminitis in horses but the pathogenesis of laminitis is not known. One hypothesis is that the development of laminitis is related to an insulin induced dysfunction of the …

The aim of our project is to develop an ethical evaluation tool for Equine Assisted Therapy that considers the welfare and the dignity of both horse and human. This tool will facilitate the evaluation of a practice giving information on the good life of both the horse and the human. If the practice …

Many horses with bacterial infection of a synovial structure do not survive or regain their full athletic performance. One essential prognostic factor is time from contamination until correct treatment is initiated. Proper treatment requires a microbiological diagnosis and this process takes 2 -3 …

The veterinarian evaluates the motion pattern of the horse visually to decide which limb is lame. When a horse unloads a limb due to pain a compensatory lameness can be seen in another limb which can be interpreted as lameness by mistake. This could be a very big problem if the wrong limb is …

Many horses in regular training/competing have an asymmetric motion pattern to a similar degree as horses examined for lameness. To what extent these asymmetries are caused by pain is unknown and might be a potential welfare problem for the horse. The aim is to investigate movement asymmetries in …

Plant establishment is very critical for spring oilseed rape, especially under dry conditions on clay soils. With conventional tillage, the soil drying process in the spring gives little plant available water in the seedbed for small-grained seeds with shallow sowing depth. Alternatively, soil …

Today's large and heavy equipment causes soil compaction, which can be minimized by concentrating all traffic to specific locations in the field. The concept is called Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF). Today there is also a strong trend to reduce the cultivation intensity. CTF reduces the need for …
