The project goal is to demonstrate the technical feasibility for a production chain for composite applications based or reed canary grass. New business opportunities for agriculture will be evaluated and promoted. The project will use red canary grass as a constituent in biobased composite materials. The microstructure of reed canary grass will be investigated and its building blocks evaluated for further processing into plastics, fibres and core materials. The building blocks such as nano-crystalline cellulose and cellulose fibers in different scales will be used. The prospects for also use lignin and hemicellulose byproducts upon isolation of cellulose, in products for the chemical, textile and food industries will be evaluated. Composite products will be produced to demonstrate the possibilities. Through the project, we intend to demonstrate new potential uses for red canary grass which can lead to more and higher-value products than current animal feed, stall bedding and biofuel.
