Plant establishment is very critical for spring oilseed rape, especially under dry conditions on clay soils. With conventional tillage, the soil drying process in the spring gives little plant available water in the seedbed for small-grained seeds with shallow sowing depth. Alternatively, soil moisture could be saved by leaving the fields without tillage in the autumn, and perform shallow tillage in the spring.
The objective of the project is to secure plant establishment, by tilling the soil only in the spring, also in combination with different sowing dates. The project will be carried out with field experiments during three years on three soils with different texture, and with field studies on farms today using this system. Within the project, new technique will be tested to determine seedbed properties.
