The aim of this project is to show the importance of liming and growing inter crops on soil fertility and
reduced storage losses in sugar beet and carrots. The aim is also to show the economical benefits for the
farmers. The hypothesis behind the actions are that they increase the biological activity in the soil, improve
structure in upper- and lower soil layers and reduce plant diseases. Seven practical field trials with liming
and growing oil seed radish are planned in each crop. The effect of the actions will be followed up by soil
samples, harvest and storage experiments in both crops. The relevance and importance of this project in
applied research is very high. The results are directly applicable to the situation of the farmers and the trial
sites will be used for demonstration purposes as well.
