The role of training and competition surfaces as a cause of orthopaedic injury in equestrian disciplines has been given attention over the last years. This has led to a need for objective description of arena properties. With means from FEI, SH and other donating bodies our research group has developed a method for measuring characteristics of equine sports surfaces and also studied risk factors for injury in show jumping horses. A validation experiment and extensive measurements of European show jumping arenas have been performed. Analysis and compilation of results need to be carried out. This will lead to user-friendly surface description parameters and information on connection between dynamic characteristics and construction/material of arenas. With this application we hope to receive funding for the completion of Elin Hernlund’s PhD project, in which these are the final studies.
