Storage diseases, which are caused by different fungi species, decrease the profitability of the Swedish fruit production. New methods are needed to transform the production into organic cultivation. The aim of this project is therefore to develop new strategies of controlling the pathogens in organic production of apples and pears. In this project the most harmful pathogens will be identified, and the sources of fruit infection and time for spreading will be controlled. Different safe strategies for pathogen control will be investigated, e.g. treatment with natural fungicides, ozone, hypochloric acid, and storage with new methods, so-called dynamic atmosphere storage. These actions in combination with educational efforts will lead to decreased losses and better quality. The project will be executed in collaboration with growers, advisory personnel, and personnel at the storage facilities to increase knowledge about pest control and optimal preventive methods.
