Climate change with increasing droughts and excessive rainfall, challenges forage production for livestock industry. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a stress-tolerant grass, being introduced in Sweden as a perennial forage and grain crop. We aim to develop recommendations for nitrogen (N)-fertilization rate, harvest time, and silage conservation of IWG for optimum forage yield and feed value for livestock. A replicated field experiment will be established at three locations in Sweden to evaluate N-fertilization rate and harvest time of first cut and N-fertilization rate and regrowth interval on dry-matter yield and feed value of IWG. Fermentation quality, DM losses and aerobic stability of ensiled IWG with and without additive will be studied. N-fertilization rates and harvest regimes will be tested at demonstration fields on farms across Sweden to evaluate IWG performance under practical conditions and results will be communicated at field days, conferences, and in scientific papers.
Klimatförändringar med längre perioder av torka och stora regnmängder utmanar grovfoderodlingen för lantbrukare. Flerårigt vetegräs (Thinopyrum intermedium) är en stresstålig gröda som kan användas till skörd av grovfoder och kärna. Vårt mål är att utveckla rekommendationer för kväve(N)-gödslingsnivå, skördetidpunkt och ensilering av flerårigt vetegräs för optimal grovfoderavkastning och fodervärde för lantbrukets djur. Fältförsök etableras på tre platser i Sverige för att utvärdera N-gödslingsnivå och skördetidpunkt i första skörd samt N-gödslingsnivå och återväxt intervall på grödans grovfoderavkastning och fodervärde. Fermenteringskvalitet och förluster studeras hos grödan då den ensileras med eller utan tillsatsmedel. N-gödslingsnivåer och skördestrategier testas i demonstrationsfält på gårdar från norra till södra Sverige för att utvärdera grödans prestanda under praktiska förhållanden och resultat kommuniceras vid fältvandringar, konferenser och i vetenskapliga publikationer.
