Poultry have a strong motivation for foraging and spend most of the day pecking and searching for food. In commercial conditions, the birds are fed a pellet diet, which is consumed very quickly. Consequently, hens spend a large part of the day engaging in abnormal non-food related pecking activities such as feather pecking. Therefore, the aim of this project is to test the use of Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) as a novel environmental enrichment to promote foraging behaviour and reduce feather pecking in laying hens. A secondary aim is to use larvae, which are rich in protein and are grown in Sweden using local blue mussel by-products, as an alternative food source for laying hens. The use of larvae in poultry feed has, therefore, the potential to improve the welfare of laying hens and promote the sustainability of the Swedish egg industry by reducing the use of imported soy and introducing a circular system, regaining lost nutrients back into the food production loop.

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …
