A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many riding schools in Sweden and Norway offer riding for pre-school children, despite the fact that riding instructors say that they are 'too young to ride'. Overall, research on pre-school children's sport activities is scant and there is no research focusing horse riding. The aim of the project Too young to ride? is therefore to increase the knowledge of horse and riding education for young children with the objective to develop safer horse environments that take into account the welfare of horses. The project will be analysed using sociology of childhood and 'humanimal' research. The results of the project are relevant for riding schools, instructors and horse industry in Sweden and Norway.
