We work with the vision that it possible to reduce herbicide use and completely abandon glyphosate in reduced and no-till systems by promoting soil health and crop vigour through a diverse crop rotation, cover crops and mechanical weed control. In field experiments, we compare innovative glyphosate free reduced and no-till systems where we also use little or no herbicides with a system where tillage, glyphosate and other herbicides are used according to best common practice. The experiments will be conducted in Skåne and Uppland and consist of a six year rotation managed according to four different protocols. The experiments will start in year one and four of the rotations in separate main plots in a split-plot design to be able to investigate all six crops during the three-year project period and in the long term to be able to separate the effect of management from the effect of annual conditions.

Cereal production is limited by many different factors. Leaf diseases are often well known, while diseases on roots are more difficult to identify. Root diseases are often caused by oomycetes, fungus-like microorganisms that live for years in soil and on old root debris, parasitizing the roots of …

A sustainable use of phosphorus fertilizers has engaged a large number of researchers, especially how to measure
the soil content of available phosphorus. However, the development of results to useful methods for agriculture has
not been a priority. The recommendations are based on extraction with …

About 200 dairy farms in Sweden use recycled manure solids (RMS) as bedding material and the number is increasing. Advantages is low price, reliable availability and good cow comfort. The main disadvantage is the risk of increased bacterial growth on the lying area affecting especially udder health …

The project aims are to use the information about cow's DNA profile to estimate the severity of fertility problems caused by specific genetic defects in the Swedish Red (SRB) and Holstein dairy breeds, and to estimate the economic impact of pregnancy losses caused by these genetic defects. Our goal …

Every year, about 500,000 claw trimmings are recorded in Swedish dairy cattle. The aim of claw trimming is to detect, treat and prevent painful claw lesions. However, the claw trimming in itself can be harmful and cause claw lesions if it is not done correctly. The aim of the project is to develop …

The conversion into a bio-based economy in Sweden requires a broad range of initiatives. One of the challenges is that additional sources of biomass will be needed. High yield potential, low conversion and production costs are critical success factors for new raw material. Salix is an energy crop …

Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. …
