Food production needs to increase in a sustainable way. This great challenge requires evaluation methods that gives information for better understanding of the impacts from agriculture and food and how to manage those impacts. The project addresses methodologies that include a broad range of environmental impacts to be used for holistic environmental evaluations of agri-food systems. This is done through analyzing and developing frameworks (data, methods and impact indicators) for environmental sustainability evaluation of agri-food systems, testing the frameworks in an innovative agricultural system including grass-based biorefineries and associated feed and dairy production, and making recommendations on the use of the assessment frameworks. A project stakeholder group consisting of representatives from agri-food industry, farmers´ and advisory organisations, regional and national boards and agencies and NGO:s is included in the research activities, e.g. through workshops.

Conventional production of meat-type chickens in Sweden is characterized by high bio-security and low use of antibiotics. Still, there are indications of variations in day old chick quality causing economic losses in terms of variations in growth and increased condemnation at slaughter. The aim of …

Mastitis (udder inflammation) is the most costly disease among dairy cows. Swedish studies show that first parity cows often have udder infections and mastitis at calving, which may have considerable negative effects on their milk production and longevity, but that the prevalence varies among …

The aim is to get basic data for testing impact energy resistance of stable fittings and building elements. The goal is to quantify potential impact energy of horse kicks in order to elucidate the implication of “sufficient strength to resist horse kicks”, which is a demand for stable fitting …

Brachyspira pilosicoli causes spirochetal diarrhea resulting in reduced growth and great economic losses in pig herds. The disease is treated with antibiotics but today we see an increased incidence of antibiotic resistance in the bacteria, which may lead to difficulties to treat the disease in the …

Introduction of African swine fever to Sweden would be devastating for the national pig industry. Infected wild boar are considered the most likely route of introduction to Swedish domestic pigs and preventive measures are needed. Knowledge of how infection from wild boar to pigs can be prevented, …

Free living nematodes (FLN) and root-knot nematodes (RKN) are increasing problems in root and tuber crops such as potato, sugar beet and carrot. There is a need for effective sanitation techniques and tolerant crops/varieties to keep population levels low in the rotation. Recently, the severe …

The purpose is to examine haylage 'intolerance' in horses, which is expressed as diarrhoeic faeces in some horses when they are fed haylage (sometimes also when fed hay). A typical appearance is two-phase faeces - one solid and one liquid. It is not known why or how this condition appears, and it …
