Correct assessment of hind limb lameness is a challenge, also for most experienced vets. This causes incorrect diagnoses and faulty treatment interventions which lead to unnecessary suffering for the horses and an unnecessary financial burden for owners and insurance companies. The aim of this project is to improve both the subjective visual assessment as well as objective measurements of hind limb lameness in order to refine the diagnostic methods (e.g. by associating specific movement patterns to certain diagnoses). The project is a joint effort between the veterinary universities and clinics at SLU in Uppsala and NMBU in Oslo and will be performed in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College in London and Utrecht University. The researchers provide competencies in clinical surgery and orthopedics, biomechanics and pedagogics that will ensure that the best possible clinical tools for subjective and objective lameness assessment will be produced.

Our plan is to develop a simple, cheap and safe tool to estimate the body size and weight of dairy cows analysed from photographs taken with smartphones. This tool would directly contribute to increased competitiveness, good working environment and animal welfare in dairy production. It will also …

The carbon footprint for ruminants is high compared to other food products of animal origin but grazing animals such
as beef and lamb have other positive effects on the environment such as increased biodiversity and carbon
sequestration. Beef- and lamb producers need clear guidelines on how to …

The aim of the project is to study effects of LED-light on milk production and activity in dairy cows. The main hypotheses are that LED light allows maintained cow activity and milk production with less energy used for illumination, and that LED-light makes it possible to apply a dark period during …

The transition from winter-feeding to pasture involves a considerable diet change that might compromise the health of horses. Diseases like colic as well as insulin dysregulation and pasture associated laminitis are related to diet changes and pasture intake. However, little information exist on …

Automation technology is developing rapidly, not least in agriculture. Several of the biggest challenges in vehicular automation technology, such as complex interactions with other road users, are less problematic for agricultural vehicles than for road vehicles. There is therefore potential for …

The role of liming in the crop rotation remains to be thoroughly investigated. Within two recent SLF projects, yield in sugar beet, barley and oil seed rape has been measured in the first rotation. In 2018, beets will be grown for a second time which gives us unique possibilities with the aim to …
