Racing unshod improves the speed, but not all horses have sufficient hoof quality to run barefoot repeatedly without risking health problems. If measures of the ability to race barefoot based on routinely recorded data can be used as a genetic selection tool, it will improve animal health and welfare and be of economic value. Knowledge about effects of racing barefoot on later performance is valuable for management decisions. Very few studies incorporated large field data on performance under different shoeing conditions, and genetic analysis of such data is lacking. This project aims to study if we can select for the ability to race barefoot in trotting horses, to indirectly improve hoof quality and performance. Different traits related to the proportion or number of barefoot races within a set period will be analysed. Correlations with the performance traits in the genetic evaluation will be estimated, as will effects on racing longevity from racing barefoot early in the career.

Forage crops occupy a dominant part of the agricultural landscape in Sweden and form the basis of ruminant diets. Farmers aim to maximize harvest yield while maintaining a high level of forage quality. The proposed project is a partnership between SLU and Dataväxt, and aims to develop a decision …

There is an increasing interest in biochar for soil improvement, as carbon sink and as feed additive. Biochar has the ability to bind aflatoxins and anti-nutritional substances in feed and can also bind to certain bacteria, and thereby improve chick performance and health. Biochar can reduce …

Respiratory disease is a major problem in pig production worldwide causing mortalities and impaired growth with reduced welfare and economic losses. There is increasing evidence that respiratory disease is not always linked to single pathogens but multifactorial, referred to as the porcine …

A high rate of on-farm deaths and euthanized cows is an indication of poor animal welfare, leads to economic losses for farmers and is not compatible with sustainable food production. The mortality rate of Swedish dairy cows is high from an international perspective and efforts are needed to …

Climate change with increasing droughts and excessive rainfall, challenges forage production for livestock industry. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a stress-tolerant grass, being introduced in Sweden as a perennial forage and grain crop. We aim to develop recommendations for nitrogen …

Globally, Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Outbreaks of campylobacteriosis have been reported in Sweden in the recent years, despite measures being applied by the poultry industry. Our purpose is to investigate Campylobacter strains from Swedish …

The project aims to study the long-term effect of structure liming, and to test if minimum tillage can prolong the duration of this effect. The hypothesis is that structure liming effects diminish over time, but by minimizing soil tillage we can prolong this effect. Studies will be performed in six …

Soil organic carbon is an important factor for soil health and productivity. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) also plays a crucial role in meeting the climate goals. For that purpose, catch- and cover crops are identified as a cost-effective management practice that combines SCS with other ecosystem …

SLU has developed an innovative technology that converts human urine to high-quality solid fertiliser. On Gotland, SLU and Gotlands Bryggeri have also shown that urine can effectively fertilise barley, which can be processed further to make beer. Over the next few years, SLU and the Bryggeri need …

The risk of soil compaction is high in Sweden, as soils are often wet during field operations and because heavy machinery is used. The predicted increase in precipitation and increase of extreme weather events with heavy rainfall will potentially increase this risk, indicating a need for a reliable …
