The Swedish dairy industry has made significant improvements in welfare, feeding, disease control and management. However, diagnosis and prevention of a very common metabolic disorder, subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), remains a challenge. Even in well-managed dairy herds 11 to 26% of SARA cases are suspected in cows in the early to mid-lactation period, resulting in significant economic losses and poor welfare. Being subclinical, SARA lacks clear symptoms, and is therefore difficult to diagnose with existing methods and markers. We propose to fill this gap by identifying metabolites in bio-fluids associated with the onset and progression of SARA using state-of-the-art metabolomics techniques and developing a novel paper-based test for early detection. The development of tests for early detection of SARA could facilitate timely intervention and prevent clinical welfare implications.
The Swedish dairy industry has made significant improvements in animal welfare, feeding, disease control and herd management. However, diagnosis and prevention of a very common metabolic disorder, subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), remains a challenge. Even in well-managed dairy herds, 11 to 26% of SARA cases are suspected in cows in early to mid-lactation period, resulting in significant direct and indirect economic losses, and leading to suffering in domesticated cows. SARA lacks clear symptoms, and is difficult to diagnose with existing methods. We propose to fill this gap by identifying metabolites in bio-fluids associated with the onset and progression of SARA using state-of-the-art metabolomics techniques and developing a novel paper-based test for early detection. Our goal is to provide a novel detection method for SARA, support cattle welfare, make the dairy production more sustainable and efficient and promote climate-friendly production through optimal feed conversion.

The carbon footprint for ruminants is high compared to other food products of animal origin but grazing animals such
as beef and lamb have other positive effects on the environment such as increased biodiversity and carbon
sequestration. Beef- and lamb producers need clear guidelines on how to …

The project aims to lay the foundation for genomic selection in Swedish beef cattle populations. Genomic selection has revolutionized animal breeding and much increased genetic progress in e.g. dairy cattle. Improved animal breeding increases production efficiency and genomic selection enables …

Grass for grazing or forage production contains variable amounts of carbohydrates, which often are described as the good (fiber), the bad (sugar) and the ugly (fructans) in relation to prevention, and development of diseases like insulin resistance and laminitis. There is a large variation in …

Knowledge of disease development in wheat is a prerequisite for good advice on economically and environmentally
adapted control strategies. This project is based on knowledge from a previous SLF project about molecular detection
and spore traps, which showed that the different spore traps catch …

The goal is models for translating satellite data from the time of supplementary fertilisation directly to nitrogen (N) recommendation maps. The crops are winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). A new multispectral camera for drones, with nine bands of the same …

The purpose of this project is to define the amount of slaked lime needed for a given clay soil. We hypothesise that the amount of slaked lime needed for minimal phophorus loss is dependent on the clay content of the soil. The study will be conducted in a field with a drainage system and measuring …

Digitization in agriculture sweeps like a tsunami over Swedish agriculture. Knowledge of its components and, above all, the profitability of investing in digitization is very low. The purpose of the project is to hold a competition in digitizing plant cultivation. The competition will be carried …
