Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. We will gather 60-70 farmers in Västergötland and Östergötland and i) perform quantitative surveys and interviews to identify perceived risks, adaption measures and knowledge gaps for securing stable crop production in a changing climate, and ii) measure soil quality on 60-70 farm fields and collect long-term data on soil management, yield and weather to quantify relationships between soil management, soil quality, crop productivity and yield stability. Our hypothesis is that good soil quality improves yield stability, and that a more diverse (e.g. diverse crop rotation) and less intense (e.g. low tillage intensity) soil management improves soil quality.

A high rate of on-farm deaths and euthanized cows is an indication of poor animal welfare, leads to economic losses for farmers and is not compatible with sustainable food production. The mortality rate of Swedish dairy cows is high from an international perspective and efforts are needed to …

Climate change with increasing droughts and excessive rainfall, challenges forage production for livestock industry. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a stress-tolerant grass, being introduced in Sweden as a perennial forage and grain crop. We aim to develop recommendations for nitrogen …

Globally, Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Outbreaks of campylobacteriosis have been reported in Sweden in the recent years, despite measures being applied by the poultry industry. Our purpose is to investigate Campylobacter strains from Swedish …

The project aims to study the long-term effect of structure liming, and to test if minimum tillage can prolong the duration of this effect. The hypothesis is that structure liming effects diminish over time, but by minimizing soil tillage we can prolong this effect. Studies will be performed in six …

Soil organic carbon is an important factor for soil health and productivity. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) also plays a crucial role in meeting the climate goals. For that purpose, catch- and cover crops are identified as a cost-effective management practice that combines SCS with other ecosystem …

SLU has developed an innovative technology that converts human urine to high-quality solid fertiliser. On Gotland, SLU and Gotlands Bryggeri have also shown that urine can effectively fertilise barley, which can be processed further to make beer. Over the next few years, SLU and the Bryggeri need …

The risk of soil compaction is high in Sweden, as soils are often wet during field operations and because heavy machinery is used. The predicted increase in precipitation and increase of extreme weather events with heavy rainfall will potentially increase this risk, indicating a need for a reliable …

Even if Sweden is historically regarded as a water-affluent country, lately sustainable water use and water circularity have become topics of high concern. Irrigation is dependent on high quality water resources, and the need for accessible water resources becomes stronger under exceptionally dry …

An improved strategy for agricultural drainage is important for both economic and environmental reasons. There are indications on environmental benefits of a good drainage but lack of studies that directly shows this. The aim of the project is to develop a basis for design recommendations for new …

The use of safely reclaimed water for agriculture irrigation is a promising solution to address water shortages, especially on Gotland. One primary concern is the introduction of organic micropollutants (OMPs), such as pharmaceuticals and other chemicals, into the agricultural ecosystem and food …
