Globally, Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Outbreaks of campylobacteriosis have been reported in Sweden in the recent years, despite measures being applied by the poultry industry. Our purpose is to investigate Campylobacter strains from Swedish outbreaks and identify factors that allow these strains to spread and persist in the production chain. Phenotypic characteristics will be defined and compared to non-outbreak strains and coupled to genotypic characteristics to investigate what is behind their success to cause outbreaks in humans. We will investigate tolerance and adaption mechanisms against various stress factors, e.g. dehydration, oxygen and freezing, and the ability to cause infection in human epithelial cells. The findings will contribute scientific knowledge on why certain strains are more likely to cause outbreaks and form recommendations for prevention of Campylobacter in the broiler chicken production.

Poultry have a strong motivation for foraging and spend most of the day pecking and searching for food. In commercial conditions, the birds are fed a pellet diet, which is consumed very quickly. Consequently, hens spend a large part of the day engaging in abnormal non-food related pecking …

This application aims at finding a solution to a problem that exists in greenhouse production. Greenhouses have long been considered to be closed systems with no leakage to the surrounding environment. However, it has been shown that plant protection products (PPP) are found in the environment …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

A sustainable use of phosphorus fertilizers has engaged a large number of researchers, especially how to measure
the soil content of available phosphorus. However, the development of results to useful methods for agriculture has
not been a priority. The recommendations are based on extraction with …
