Cannabinoids have potential to induce analgesia and muscle relaxation which would be beneficial for equine practice. Today there is no drug labelled for veterinary use containing these cannabinoids, but there are some herbal oil products which unofficially have been reported to be used in horses, despite no information about their efficacy nor absorption, distribution and elimination in horses.
To protect horse welfare, screening in anti-doping- and medication control programs is motivated due to these compounds’ properties. Unfortunately, naturally occurring cannabinoids have been demonstrated as feed contaminants which have resulted in positive tests in the doping control. Since pharmacological information about these compounds is incomplete, all findings can be considered as a doping violation, a major and costly problem for the feed-industry. This study provides warranted information and knowledge in potential use of these compounds, for safe feed and increase horse welfare.
