All horses grazing freely are at risk of parasitic diseases. Due to a growing problem with drug resistance in parasites, there is a need to improve the diagnostic methods. One important problem with today's situation is that one diagnostic procedure costs significantly more than one treatment, both in terms of money and in working hours. Thus, there are strong driving forces to treat "just in case" rather than giving treatment only in cases where it is strictly motivated.
We therefore propose a diagnostic system based on microfluidic separation of fecal samples. The samples are treated in different steps so that the eggs of interest can be sorted and then analyzed using primarily cellular phone-based microscopy which is very easy to use for the horse owner, but also using impedance spectroscopy, and DNA analysis.
We expect our microfluidic system for the diagnosis of fecal samples is faster, easier to use, more sensitive, more accurate and less expensive than today's systems.

In modern large-scale pig production, first-rate hygienic conditions are necessary to avoid outbreaks of diseases and promote and maintain a good biosecurity, However, evaluation of pen hygiene is highly subjective. The project aims to adapt and evaluate a new method for the standardised measure of …
