The use in horticulture of neonicotinoid insecticides is under debate at the European level due to their toxic side effects on natural enemies and pollinators. Alternatives need to be developed to provide efficient and sustainable control of economic important pest such as aphids. In this project we will set-up an IPM tool to enhance the biological control of aphids in fruit crops in Sweden. We will identify herbivory induced plant volatiles released upon aphid attack by apple and cherry and incorporate them in a biodegradable paste to pull beneficials to fruit trees (Predator-Pull). We will also formulate sugars and proteins within another biodegradable paste to divert ants from attending aphids on trees (Ant-Stop). The two optimized biodegradable pastes will be applied simultaneously (Stop&Pull) on trees with the aim to maximize aphid biocontrol. The knowledge acquired through this study will form a base to increase the efficacy of biological control in a number of additional crops.

Innovative outdoor poultry production farms are faced with new challenges. Therefore we intend to: 1) Develop user-friendly guidelines for risk assessment of nutrient load and losses in outdoor systems 2) Identify possible improvements and technical solutions for reducing risk of phosphorus losses …

The aim of this project is to investigate individual differences in the rate of passage of feed, feed efficiency, microbial flora and methane production in cows with different ability to consume large proportion of roughage.
Our previous studies show that methane production differs between cows …

Icelandic horses are increasingly popular in Sweden and Norway. Their strength lies in their unique gaits, however, in lame horses this trait becomes a weakness. Evaluating not only lameness but also the leg of origin for lameness in any gait other than trot is exceptionally challenging. Today, we …

Slippery floors results in falls and injuries which can be fatal. Moreover, on dairy farms slippery floors impede oestrus behaviour and ease of heat detection and as result cause economical losses due to impaired fertility. Grooving is the most common way to treat concrete floors to reduce …
