Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat. The WHO global action plan on AMR mentions LA-MRSA (Livestock-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is prevalent in pigs in many countries. The public health threat is generally low but for affected individuals it is a serious health risk and the societal costs may be high.
This project will provide a much-needed basis for LA-MRSA control in Swedish pig production. Due to a lack of strategy for positive findings, no surveillance is currently conducted. The project uses theoretical models to simulate the spread of LA-MRSA, and different control measures are assessed for cost-efficiency.
In this PhD project, the basic model is built and simulation of spread and control comes next. Collaboration with researchers in Denmark and Norway uses their experiences and data. Cooperation with Swedish farmers' organisations and veterinary authorities ensures that the results are directly applicable for the end-users.

Healthy seeds are a prerequisite for sustainable food systems. The seed-borne plant disease, common bunt (CB) in wheat, caused by the fungi Tilletia tritici and T. laevis, is a major problem in agriculture. Efficient chemical seed treatments exist, but it is often difficult to keep up with autumn …

Dairy cows are an important part of a sustainable and resilient food production as they facilitate circular flows on the farm and contribute to carbon sequestration, open landscapes and biodiversity. To achieve a sustainable dairy production in all parts of Sweden, we need large as well as small …

Colibacillosis is a common disease in poultry and includes both local and systemic infections. Increased knowledge is necessary for development of effective methods to prevent disease, such as improved management routines, modification of environment, and vaccine development. The first study (WP1) …

A major challenge facing agriculture is handling water excess and deficit exacerbated by climate change, while reducing eutrophication. Controlled drainage (CD) has the potential to address these issues and improve yield stability. Despite CDs clear benefits and state subsidies for CD installation, …

While the equine sector in Sweden and Norway provides leisure activities, entertainment and employment for many people of all ages, these come with associated negative effects. Studies of the environmental impacts caused by the sector show that nutrient leakage from manure piles, paddocks and …

Our plan is to develop a simple, cheap and safe tool to estimate the body size and weight of dairy cows analysed from photographs taken with smartphones. This tool would directly contribute to increased competitiveness, good working environment and animal welfare in dairy production. It will also …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …
