Soil organic carbon is an important factor for soil health and productivity. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) also plays a crucial role in meeting the climate goals. For that purpose, catch- and cover crops are identified as a cost-effective management practice that combines SCS with other ecosystem services. There is a great need to estimate the amount of current and future SCS in Swedish soils achievable with this practice. This project aims to develop a robust and dynamic method to estimate the potential area of implementation and associated SCS potential. We will also analyze how soil organic carbon contents affects crop yield and resilience to climate change, and address problems relating to bias in data from long-term field trials. Results will improve extension service tools used to assess the effect of management practices on soil fertility and carbon storage, being useful for farmers and decision-makers at various levels, and for the Swedish climate reporting.

This application aims at finding a solution to a problem that exists in greenhouse production. Greenhouses have long been considered to be closed systems with no leakage to the surrounding environment. However, it has been shown that plant protection products (PPP) are found in the environment …

This project is about refining grass to meet a demand for proteins for, above all, organic poultry production and an expected increased demand for soy-free feed solutions for monogastric animals. Forage-based products also improve the economic preconditions to increase the proportion of grass in …

The purpose of the project is to produce reliable emission factors for storage of poultry manure regarding methane and nitrous oxide emissions.
This project will focus on methane and nitrous oxide emissions from laying hens and the project is a supplement to an FoU project funded by the Swedish …

According to applicable legislation, manure and digestate must be sanitized in order to prevent disease transmission before they may be merchandised on the open market. Swedish plants currently have the choice between using one of two standard methods (70 °C for 1 h, or 52 °C for 10 h), or carry …

The rollback of insecticides exposes Swedish horticulture to a multitude of pests. Targeted and sustainable innovations are sorely needed. Here we target several pests of fruits, onion, cabbage, beans and salad and aim to develop 1) species-selective lures using a novel olfactomics platform, 2) use …

Fruit tree canker, caused by the fungus Neonectria ditissima, has become a threat for Swedish apple production. No efficient protective measures are available and no complete genetic resistance is known in apple. However, apple genotypes differ in the level of partial resistance which must be fully …

Healthy seeds are a prerequisite for sustainable food systems. The seed-borne plant disease, common bunt (CB) in wheat, caused by the fungi Tilletia tritici and T. laevis, is a major problem in agriculture. Efficient chemical seed treatments exist, but it is often difficult to keep up with autumn …

A major challenge facing agriculture is handling water excess and deficit exacerbated by climate change, while reducing eutrophication. Controlled drainage (CD) has the potential to address these issues and improve yield stability. Despite CDs clear benefits and state subsidies for CD installation, …
