The aim of this project is to investigate individual differences in the rate of passage of feed, feed efficiency, microbial flora and methane production in cows with different ability to consume large proportion of roughage.
Our previous studies show that methane production differs between cows with the same intake and that individual differences are greater than the effect of the diet. This variation could make it possible to breed cows with lower methane production and more energy for milk production. However, it is important to identify the reasons for the difference, otherwise there is a risk of selecting cows that produce less methane due to of less digestion of feed. This study plans to use cows in an already funded project where the individual's ability to utilize roughage is studied. We want to collect the data on methane production, microbial composition, passage rate and genetic markers for methane production in order to evaluate the potential for selection of efficient cows.

Lime is known to have many positive effects, some of which can be unexpected. The proposed study will measure the effects of carbonate lime (CaCO3) and mixed lime (CaCO3 and Ca(OH)2) on all crops in a rotation (cereal, oilseed rape, canning peas, potatoes). The combined effects of liming on soil …

In an ongoing project, funded by SLF, examines the effect of sowing time and seed rate on yield. Two field trials were established in autumn 2014 respectively 2015 in Skåne and Östergötland. Now we are looking for funding to expand the project with a third trial year. Two years is too short time to …

Poor oxygenation of blood that occurs when a horse is anesthetized and placed on its back is a critical risk factor for anesthetic complications, and the risk of complications from low oxygen continues into anesthetic recovery. When nitric oxide (NO) is delivered as a pulse in the beginning of the …

The project aims to develop a novel strategy to improve longevity and maternal traits in a pig breeding program. We will evaluate the use of genetic markers on crossbred animals to strength pig breeding. A method called genomic selection (GS) will be used, which utilizes DNA-markers for the genetic …

Genomic selection is revolutionizing animal breeding, since selection is based on the joint genetic merit of all SNP alleles across the genome. Lack of accurate and frequent data, however, forms the most important barrier to realize the full potential of genomic selection. There is on the other …

The aim is to study the possibility to improve profitability on herd level in Swedish milk production by using sexed semen and genotyping heifers in the dairy herds and combine this with planned crossbreeding and use of beef semen. For this purpose we will estimate genetic progress and do economic …
