The goal of the project is to digitize the data from the Swedish official field trials through automated estimates of important traits such as germination, growth, resistance, maturity and the effect of plant protection products. The purpose is to streamline and improve scoring of both diseases but also plant density (biomass), wintering etc. Scoring today are made by different people, which means that there is a great variation in scoring from different people. It is important that methods that save time are developed. In order to reach the goal, drones equipped with cameras will be used and the images will be processed using machine learning. This project will be a big step towards being able to use drones for image analysis in the future instead of manual ocular inspection. This is to prevent differences in grading and form a better holistic view of the grades and to be able to more easily follow an experiment and study its change when diseases occur.

Achieving and maintaining a good stable climate with low ammonia levels is a major challenge for many poultry farmers. In addition to adversely affecting animal health, production and the working environment, high levels of ammonia in the stable can also lead to increased environmental impact. The …

A cornerstone of the Swedish Food Strategy is trust in Swedish food production. Yet each year Swedish farmers and food processors lose both money and trust due to food fraud, especially for non-Swedish meat relabelled as Swedish. Most fraud remains undetected. A recent analytical development, Rapid …

Green house production depends or reliable substrates and fertilizers. Peat is the dominating substrate in Sweden and internationally. There is a debate about reducing the peat use since the mining for peat may increase climate gas emissions and disturb sensitive ecosystems. Thus, alternative for …

Humus is an important indicator of soil quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is a cost-effective measure to reduce the climatic impact of food production systems. The national soil-monitoring program (SMP) show an upward trend in SOC during the past 20 years, mostly attributed to an …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

Soft tissues around the kneecap (patella) as a cause of equine lameness is an area yet to be scientifically investigated but that is often clinically treated with “alternative” methods without an established diagnosis. In human medicine, patellar tendinosis is a common verified diagnosis. …
