Acquired equine polyneuropathy (AEP) is a devastating neurologic disease affecting Nordic horses. Characteristic histopathological changes have been shown in the peripheral nerves of horses euthanized due to the disease. These include re- and demyelination as well as hypertrophy of perikaria and proteinaceous inclusions in the myelinproducing Schwann cells. The hypothesis is that an unknown factor, possibly from forage, disrupts the Schwann cell metabolism. Further studies is needed in order to elucidate the aetiology, but the availability of nervesamples is limited as they need to be sampled in immediate association with euthanasia. Transport to pathology units is mostly not feasible due to the severity of clinical signs, making collected samples very valuable. To overcome this challenge we intend to establish Schwann cell cultures, allowing freezing and thawing for further studies. The method is already established at NMBU for dogs and will be applied in affected and control horses.

Introduction of African swine fever to Sweden would be devastating for the national pig industry. Infected wild boar are considered the most likely route of introduction to Swedish domestic pigs and preventive measures are needed. Knowledge of how infection from wild boar to pigs can be prevented, …

Agriculture in plain-lands is often specialized in crop production, with no on-farm use of ley as animal fodder, and crop rotations that often includes only annual crops (e.g. oilseed rape, cereals and sugar beets). At the same time, integrating ley in arable cropping systems generates several …

The Brassica pod midge Dasineura brassicae and its facilitator, the cabbage seed pod weevil Ceutorrhynchus obstrictus, have caused serious damage in oilseed rape crops during the last few years. No locally adapted IPM strategies exist, including pesticide management thresholds with evidentiary …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

Soft tissues around the kneecap (patella) as a cause of equine lameness is an area yet to be scientifically investigated but that is often clinically treated with “alternative” methods without an established diagnosis. In human medicine, patellar tendinosis is a common verified diagnosis. …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

The overall aim of this project is to improve equine health and welfare by identifying causative mutations for inherited diseases to aid informed breeding of healthy horses. We will use a comparative genomics approach, combining whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics with state-of-the-art …
