An alarmingly high number of accidents involve humans and horses and the welfare of many horses is compromised as shown by signs of discomfort specifically during ridden work. Research indicates that this is due to miscommunication between riders/handlers and horses and mismanagement caused by insufficient basic knowledge about horses’ natural behaviour and how they learn. Our aim is, together with the riders of riding schools and their riding teachers, to identify knowledge gaps regarding horse behaviour, welfare, and rider-horse communication. Based on such co-developed information, we will analyze together how scientific research can complement the riding schools' practical knowledge and what pedagogical tools are best suited to teach evidence-based knowledge in the riding school environment. In the long run, the project is expected to contribute to an increased theoretical and practical knowledge of riders and horse owners and thereby to improved welfare of both dyad members.
