Viral infections of horses have significant impact on animal welfare and can lead to huge economic losses. One of the first early signs of a viral infection is the development of fever and to at this early step be able to identify the agent behind the infection would lead to rapid and correct treatment and also allow for the implementation of proper biosecurity measures to stop further spread. However, aetiology of fever and also some of the clinical features that may follow, e.g. neurological disorders, often remains undiagnosed. This study will use viral metagenomics to investigate the cause behind fever cases in Swedish horses as well as behind neurological disorders of horses from Sweden and from the other Nordic countries. The methodology allows us to identify all viruses present in an investigated clinical sample. Thus we hope that the knowledge gained from this project can help to further improve equine health and control the spread of these viral infections.

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

The project will develop sustainable pheromone-based methods to reduce the damage from three moth species on currants, thereby enabling profitable cultivation irrespective of management practice. During several years, the currant cultivation has decreased in Sweden and also the yield per ha has …

Spread of barnyard grass, growing in southern Sweden has accelerated during the last decade and is rapidly moving northwards. No herbicide-resistant populations have been reported from Sweden thus far, but it is only a matter of time before barnyard grass will develop herbicide resistance in …

A sustainable use of phosphorus fertilizers has engaged a large number of researchers, especially how to measure
the soil content of available phosphorus. However, the development of results to useful methods for agriculture has
not been a priority. The recommendations are based on extraction with …

It is well known that storage of animal manure and digestate causes emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3). A crust on liquid manure acts both as a physical barrier for NH3 and as a biofilter that oxidize CH4 and NH3. However, N2O can be formed in some crusts, and there …

The aim of the project is to characterize genomic diversity and inbreeding, within and between Nordic native horse breeds, with special focus on the Norwegian and Swedish breeds. For this we will use whole genome sequencing of individual and pooled DNA samples. Genomic characterization is an …

Insulin dysregulation and hyperinsulinemia is a horse welfare problem that also increase the incidence of the severely painful condition laminitis in horses. Today, no pharmacological treatment is available but recent weak evidence suggest that Sodium-glucose cotransporters (SGLT) inhibitors (e.g. …

The bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis causes the disease proliferative enteropathy. The bacterium is present in >40% of the Swedish piglet-producing herds and production losses are estimated to 2 900 SEK per sow and year. The disease is spread by faeces and the pigs are usually affected after …
