This study focuses on the meaning of equine related sports- and leisure activities in the life of persons (children, young and adults) with intellectual disabilities (ID). Regarding equine related activities aimed at people with disabilities people with ID is the largest group who take part in such activities. Research on the topic not focusing on (re)habilitation is scarce. Combining methods and theories from disability research, interaction research and ethnography, this study will shed light also on the experiences of participating leaders/instructors, accompanying support providers and horses. We also have an interest in the wider meaning of participating in equine related activities in the lives of persons with ID. Participation, self-determination and inclusion are concepts guiding the inquiry. The results have the potential to improve education about and service delivery for persons with ID as well as the economy of the equine industry
