Climate change has brought about changing conditions for agriculture. In recent years precipitation deficit during the growing season has led to a shortage of forage in Sweden. During dry years, irrigation is necessary to achieve optimal yields. In addition, irrigation can bring about positive effects on the environment by better use of production inputs. The aim of the project is to investigate quantitative and qualitative aspects that can lead to a reduced need of fodder. We will also make an analysis of the potential revenues and costs for the implementation of irrigation systems including costs for water supply.
The main objective of the project is to assess the effects of different irrigation strategies on yield levels and yield quality in terms of application timing and irrigation amount based on climate, crop development stages, soil type and soil water content. The results obtained will directly be translate into guidelines and recommendations to be used in extension services.

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

The project will develop sustainable pheromone-based methods to reduce the damage from three moth species on currants, thereby enabling profitable cultivation irrespective of management practice. During several years, the currant cultivation has decreased in Sweden and also the yield per ha has …

Spread of barnyard grass, growing in southern Sweden has accelerated during the last decade and is rapidly moving northwards. No herbicide-resistant populations have been reported from Sweden thus far, but it is only a matter of time before barnyard grass will develop herbicide resistance in …

Cereal production is limited by many different factors. Leaf diseases are often well known, while diseases on roots are more difficult to identify. Root diseases are often caused by oomycetes, fungus-like microorganisms that live for years in soil and on old root debris, parasitizing the roots of …

Feeding protein supplements is advantageous because of a positive response in milk production. Rapeseed meal has given better production responses on a protein basis than soybean meal, but its supply is not sufficient to meet the requirements of dairy production. Red clover is one alternative to …

Harness racing is hazardous as horses are running in close proximity at high speeds. Thus, an effective communication between driver and jockey-horse via rein signals to the bit is essential for safety reasons and horse welfare. However, scientific studies on rein tension in Standardbred trotters …

Just going to the bathroom is contributing to algae blooms and climate change. Sweden alone releases roughly 15400 tonnes of N and 240 tonnes of P into lakes, rivers and seas, through municipal wastewater (including after treatment). Urine contains 80% of the plant nutrients found in wastewater and …
