A primary reason for unhealthy legs and claws are unsuitable floor properties in dairy houses,
which may result in slippery floors and slip injuries to cows and mastitis.
The hygiene of a floor surface and floor properties affect the cow claw/floor interaction and gait.
The aim is to determine an objective measuring methodology that characterises a floor system through gait analysis.
Concrete and rubber floors will be characterized through gait analysis at 10 farms at 3 cleanliness levels.
In the test aisle floor cleanliness level, friction, softness and abrasiveness will be tested at 2 locations.
A digital video camera will be used for gait analysis.
The floor cleanliness will be determined by a colorimetric method and the floor physical properties by physical methods.
The statistical analysis will examine differences in how the 4 factors affect cow gait at 3 cleanliness levels
and between floor materials, resulting in thresholds for floor design and published in a scientific paper.
Resultaten publiceras i vetenskaplig artikel.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat. The WHO global action plan on AMR mentions LA-MRSA (Livestock-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is prevalent in pigs in many countries. The public health threat is generally low but for affected individuals it is a …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

Cereal production is limited by many different factors. Leaf diseases are often well known, while diseases on roots are more difficult to identify. Root diseases are often caused by oomycetes, fungus-like microorganisms that live for years in soil and on old root debris, parasitizing the roots of …

The purpose of this project is to investigate to what extent substances in algae inhibit microbial methane formation in cows. Several substances, so-called bioactive substances, in red, green and brown algae, have a significant methane reducing effect. These are promising results but in order to …
