This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in smaller and larger dairy herds, how it affects biodiversity, landscape features and emissions, and how farm profitability is affected by different types of policies. These aspects are crucial for the Swedish model with added value linked to the environment and to animal welfare. In the project we address the following research questions: 1) What explains differences in profitability between dairy farmers? 2) How does the structural change affect a) profitability in smaller and larger dairy farms, b) biodiversity and landscape features in different regions, and c) emissions of greenhouse gases and nutrients? 3) How is Swedish milk production affected by different types of policy instruments?

The purpose is to examine haylage 'intolerance' in horses, which is expressed as diarrhoeic faeces in some horses when they are fed haylage (sometimes also when fed hay). A typical appearance is two-phase faeces - one solid and one liquid. It is not known why or how this condition appears, and it …

Joint inflammation (osteoarthritis) is a common cause of lameness in horses. There is a need for safe and effective treatments of the disease. Blood derived autologous biological products such as autologous conditioned serum (ACS) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are used as intra-articular …

Many horses in training show motion asymmetries, but it is not known if these are due to pain caused by training; or due to individual biological variations. The aim of this project is to initiate three cohort studies where changes in motion symmetry will be monitored over time in riding horses and …

Resistance against antiparasitic drugs is now an increasing problem. Despite a lot of effortd put on preventive measures, such as egg counting and selective treatments, there is still a need for alternative and sustainable methods that do not result in rapid development of drug resistance. The …

The current project has a basic science and a clinical relevance part. The main project aim is to describe the blood supply to the growth cartilage of the small tarsal bones in young Icelandic Horses. Similar studies of the blood supply to long bones that ossify from three separate centers have …

Grass for grazing or forage production contains variable amounts of carbohydrates, which often are described as the good (fiber), the bad (sugar) and the ugly (fructans) in relation to prevention, and development of diseases like insulin resistance and laminitis. There is a large variation in …

Motor laterality, such as left or right-handedness, is a well-known asymmetric phenomenon in both humans and animals, incl. horses. Concurrently, lameness caused by orthopaedic injury is a common cause for asymmetry. In our study of riding horses in training, 73 % had motion asymmetries, warranting …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

The overall aim of this project is to improve equine health and welfare by identifying causative mutations for inherited diseases to aid informed breeding of healthy horses. We will use a comparative genomics approach, combining whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics with state-of-the-art …
