The aim is to get basic data for testing impact energy resistance of stable fittings and building elements. The goal is to quantify potential impact energy of horse kicks in order to elucidate the implication of “sufficient strength to resist horse kicks”, which is a demand for stable fitting material by law. To make the demand clear serves authorities, horse keepers, stable fitting manufacturers and it might reduce the risk of injuries of stabled horses.
Measuring hoof velocity changes during a kick will be done with the help of accelerometer with gyroscope fixed on the rear hoof. Horses used, standardbreds and thoroughbreds, are provoked to kick out. Impact energy will be calculated based upon earlier results about impact forces and impulses of horse kicks.
The results will be published in scientific press and as summary in Swedish, accessible on internet to download freely. The results will be used in order to work out a test method and equipment within Swedish Standards Inst.

Many horses in training show motion asymmetries, but it is not known if these are due to pain caused by training; or due to individual biological variations. The aim of this project is to initiate three cohort studies where changes in motion symmetry will be monitored over time in riding horses and …

Resistance against antiparasitic drugs is now an increasing problem. Despite a lot of effortd put on preventive measures, such as egg counting and selective treatments, there is still a need for alternative and sustainable methods that do not result in rapid development of drug resistance. The …

Grass for grazing or forage production contains variable amounts of carbohydrates, which often are described as the good (fiber), the bad (sugar) and the ugly (fructans) in relation to prevention, and development of diseases like insulin resistance and laminitis. There is a large variation in …

Laminitis, an extremely painful disease of the equine foot, is most commonly caused by elevated insulin
concentrations in blood (hyperinsulinemia). Therefore, strategies to reduce hyperinsulinemia in horses are warranted.
Studies in obese children with insulin dysregulation and hyperinsulinemia …

The goal of the applied project is to shed light on overlooked aspects of the complex subject of horse welfare.
Because of the specific position stall owners have, they are especially suitable to contribute to our knowledge about
the possibilities and limitations that set the conditions for …

Motor laterality, such as left or right-handedness, is a well-known asymmetric phenomenon in both humans and animals, incl. horses. Concurrently, lameness caused by orthopaedic injury is a common cause for asymmetry. In our study of riding horses in training, 73 % had motion asymmetries, warranting …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …
