The purpose is to examine haylage 'intolerance' in horses, which is expressed as diarrhoeic faeces in some horses when they are fed haylage (sometimes also when fed hay). A typical appearance is two-phase faeces - one solid and one liquid. It is not known why or how this condition appears, and it has not been described previously for other feeds. Also, it is not known if this condition results in higher risk for the horse to suffer serious gut disturbances. We therefore want to perform a case-control study with 30 pairs containing one affected and one unaffected horse, where each pair is housed and fed similarly. We want to study feeding, feed quality and faecal composition. Faecal microbial composition is examined with molecular methods, and faeces also analyzed for biochemical/chemical composition. Feed composition will be analyzed and feeding routines mapped. By doing so, deviations (if present) in the affected horses can be identified and open for solutions to the problem.

Applying circular economy principles to agriculture is a systematic approach to reduce the environmental and climate impact of agriculture while increasing efficiency, production and profitability. The road to circular agriculture requires that we 1) minimize external inputs, 2) reduce losses and …

Potato cultivars that are resistant to late blight and at the same time having acceptable other traits, have started to emerge. However, little of this material is used in Sweden and no organized and comparative table potato trials are done. Biological products against skin-finish diseases are …

The purpose of this project is to develop new non-chemical methods for control of different seedborne-and soilborne pathogens. Aerated steam treatment (ThermoSeed) is a modern and environmentally friendly method for seedborne pathogen sanitation, mainly used on cereals. We intend to develop the …

Agriculture in plain-lands is often specialized in crop production, with no on-farm use of ley as animal fodder, and crop rotations that often includes only annual crops (e.g. oilseed rape, cereals and sugar beets). At the same time, integrating ley in arable cropping systems generates several …

Achieving and maintaining a good stable climate with low ammonia levels is a major challenge for many poultry farmers. In addition to adversely affecting animal health, production and the working environment, high levels of ammonia in the stable can also lead to increased environmental impact. The …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat. The WHO global action plan on AMR mentions LA-MRSA (Livestock-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is prevalent in pigs in many countries. The public health threat is generally low but for affected individuals it is a …
