The project aims are to use the information about cow's DNA profile to estimate the severity of fertility problems caused by specific genetic defects in the Swedish Red (SRB) and Holstein dairy breeds, and to estimate the economic impact of pregnancy losses caused by these genetic defects. Our goal is that the increased knowledge of known genetic defects will provide a more reliable basis for avoiding matings between carriers of specific defects, as well as to enable a selection against the causative haplotypes in practical cattle breeding and thus strengthen the dairy industry's competitiveness, sustainability and public perception. The project is an in-depth study within the ongoing SLF-funded Swedish part of the Nordic fertility project. We will work with the already collected material, augmented by Växa’s cow database and genotypes. Research funding is intended to finance the last two years of a PhD for the licentiate student within the project, Patricia Ask-Gullstrand.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat. The WHO global action plan on AMR mentions LA-MRSA (Livestock-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is prevalent in pigs in many countries. The public health threat is generally low but for affected individuals it is a …

This project aims to modify existing sensor systems for adapted nitrogen fertilization to consider water stress at
supplementary fertilization in cereals. Different approaches to consider sensor data and soil information will be tested
in field trials. Current commercial systems interpret water …

Achieving and maintaining a good stable climate with low ammonia levels is a major challenge for many poultry farmers. In addition to adversely affecting animal health, production and the working environment, high levels of ammonia in the stable can also lead to increased environmental impact. The …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …
