Competing unshod is an important issue for the Swedish harness industry. There is a general opinion that performance may increase significantly but it does not always work. The reason for failure may be disturbed locomotion “balance” of the horse or due to pain from the hooves. This is obviously not acceptable. We want to develop methods to predict if the horse’s hooves will cope with competition unshod. We also want to study: how performance is affected, if there are seasons and tracks that are unsuitable, what traits hooves have that cope with competition unshod, if there are genes that explain the difference between “good” and “bad” hooves and if wounds attributed to cross-firing are more or less common in horses competing unshod. This project is important not only from a short term animal welfare perspective. If we can allow competition without shoes it may benefit Swedish trotter breeding. If performance is improved breeding may indirectly promote horses with robust hooves.

Increased production and export of products with high added values, e.g. long-ripened hard cheeses, are considered important steps for a positive development of the Swedish dairy sector. Increased investment in Swedish premium cheese will, however, require increased volumes of high quality raw milk …

The purpose of this project is to identify the transmission routes for Campylobacter to broiler flocks and recommend actions at farm level to reduce the number of chickens with Campylobacter. Furthermore, to analyse routines at slaughter including cleaning of slaughterhouses and transport crates to …

Insufficient crop protection is an increasingly limiting factor for crop production. Damage by slugs and cabbage stem flea beetles in winter oilseed rape are timely examples of increasing crop protection problems in Sweden. We will test whether companion cropping winter oilseed rape with frost …

The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne hapla, is an increasing problem in carrot cultivation in Sweden and Europe. Soil analysis is extremely important to plan sustainable crop rotations, reduce nematode multiplication in soil and eventually minimize yield loss. Traditional soil analyses are time …

Correct assessment of hind limb lameness is a challenge, also for most experienced vets. This causes incorrect diagnoses and faulty treatment interventions which lead to unnecessary suffering for the horses and an unnecessary financial burden for owners and insurance companies. The aim of this …

Although the equine sector in Sweden has gone through an expansion the last decades, the working methods have not changed. Working conditions must be improved to enable the horse industry to offer safe, sustainable and attractive jobs. The aim is to develop methods and tools for work environment …

Disease and production disturbances in a herd are often silent, and may cause major losses if they remain undetected. Continuous analysis and monitoring of data already recorded at the farm level can improve profitability. This project will develop methods for monitoring trends in production and …

The purpose of this project is to define the amount of slaked lime needed for a given clay soil. We hypothesise that the amount of slaked lime needed for minimal phophorus loss is dependent on the clay content of the soil. The study will be conducted in a field with a drainage system and measuring …

Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) associated with Culicoides biting midges is the most common allergic skin disease in
horses, seriously reducing welfare of affected horses. The main symptom is severe pruritus, with risk of self-infected
open wounds. The choice for treatment and prevention of this …
