Potato cultivars that are resistant to late blight and at the same time having acceptable other traits, have started to emerge. However, little of this material is used in Sweden and no organized and comparative table potato trials are done. Biological products against skin-finish diseases are becoming available, and skin-finish as well as drought cause increasing problems for Swedish potato growers. The main goal of this application is to promote the use of resistant cultivars and biopesticides in potato production in Sweden. This will be achieved by screening-trials with a large start material, followed by comparative trials at three different regions with different cultivation systems: conventional, biopesticides and ecological. Traits such as resistance to late blight, drought and skin-finish, as well as yield and size distribution will be analyzed. New types of molecular analyses and communication will also be carried out to ensure diversity of resistance mechanisms.

The conversion into a bio-based economy in Sweden requires a broad range of initiatives. One of the challenges is that additional sources of biomass will be needed. High yield potential, low conversion and production costs are critical success factors for new raw material. Salix is an energy crop …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

Climate change has brought about changing conditions for agriculture. In recent years precipitation deficit during the growing season has led to a shortage of forage in Sweden. During dry years, irrigation is necessary to achieve optimal yields. In addition, irrigation can bring about positive …

The sensory attributes of the raw milk are of major importance for the quality of the resulting dairy products. Since the early 90’ies, the so-called “blueberry off-flavour” has caused severe economic consequences for affected dairy farmers. The mechanism behind is still unclear, although forages …

A main challenge for regions with intensive livestock production is phosphorus (P) surplus on farms, resulting in low P use efficiency and losses to waters. The project will provide solutions to increase P recycling from animal manure. This will decrease our dependency on imported P fertilizers, …

The goal of the project is to digitize the data from the Swedish official field trials through automated estimates of important traits such as germination, growth, resistance, maturity and the effect of plant protection products. The purpose is to streamline and improve scoring of both diseases but …

Just going to the bathroom is contributing to algae blooms and climate change. Sweden alone releases roughly 15400 tonnes of N and 240 tonnes of P into lakes, rivers and seas, through municipal wastewater (including after treatment). Urine contains 80% of the plant nutrients found in wastewater and …
