A novel integrated control approach of grey mold and powdery mildew in greenhouse tomato is launched based on (i) addition of specific organic nutrients to the spray solution of microbiological control agents and (ii) exposure to selected light qualities. This enables to tailor improved establishment and activity of biocontrol strains for control of mildew and grey mold as well as direct light induced control of the fungal pathogens. Optimal arrangement of light emitting diode (LED) armatures is determined by modelling. A blue print is developed and demonstrated in the greenhouses at the SLU campus in Alnarp. This three-year-long applied research project is conducted in close collaboration between SLU, RISE and growers. The Swedish horticultural sector benefits from this project through innovative environmentally sound practices to control fungal diseases in an important greenhouse crop which can be translated to other crops.

Automation technology is developing rapidly, not least in agriculture. Several of the biggest challenges in vehicular automation technology, such as complex interactions with other road users, are less problematic for agricultural vehicles than for road vehicles. There is therefore potential for …

About 200 dairy farms in Sweden use recycled manure solids (RMS) as bedding material and the number is increasing. Advantages is low price, reliable availability and good cow comfort. The main disadvantage is the risk of increased bacterial growth on the lying area affecting especially udder health …

The project aims are to use the information about cow's DNA profile to estimate the severity of fertility problems caused by specific genetic defects in the Swedish Red (SRB) and Holstein dairy breeds, and to estimate the economic impact of pregnancy losses caused by these genetic defects. Our goal …

Every year, about 500,000 claw trimmings are recorded in Swedish dairy cattle. The aim of claw trimming is to detect, treat and prevent painful claw lesions. However, the claw trimming in itself can be harmful and cause claw lesions if it is not done correctly. The aim of the project is to develop …

We work with the vision that it possible to reduce herbicide use and completely abandon glyphosate in reduced and no-till systems by promoting soil health and crop vigour through a diverse crop rotation, cover crops and mechanical weed control. In field experiments, we compare innovative glyphosate …

The conversion into a bio-based economy in Sweden requires a broad range of initiatives. One of the challenges is that additional sources of biomass will be needed. High yield potential, low conversion and production costs are critical success factors for new raw material. Salix is an energy crop …

Adding flowers to the cropping system that support beneficial insects is a promising option to achieve crop protection
in Swedish agriculture and horticulture. However, the wide-spread adoption of this approach has been hampered by
limited economic benefit and the risk of propagating pests and …

Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. …
