An improved strategy for agricultural drainage is important for both economic and environmental reasons. There are indications on environmental benefits of a good drainage but lack of studies that directly shows this. The aim of the project is to develop a basis for design recommendations for new and renewal drainage systems on clay soils. Within the project, studies will clarify whether it is possible to extend the growing season and reduce soil compaction and thereby strengthening the soil structure and securing long-term soil fertility, as well as reducing nutrient losses with an appropriately designed drainage system. An analysis of the potential revenues and costs of implementing drainage systems will also be included. The studies will be performed in an ongoing field trial on a clay soil with high P-AL content, established year 2018. The results from the field experiments will be used as input data and to calibrate the data model DRAINMOD for evaluating long-term climate effects.

This project is connected to an already funded grazing application from Norway intending to evaluate methane production from dairy cows in different grazing systems. We aim to evaluate further some important aspects of grazing in northern Sweden. We plan to use some sensory techniques to analyse …

About 200 dairy farms in Sweden use recycled manure solids (RMS) as bedding material and the number is increasing. Advantages is low price, reliable availability and good cow comfort. The main disadvantage is the risk of increased bacterial growth on the lying area affecting especially udder health …

Insulin dysregulation (ID), a condition with excessive hyperinsulinemia, is the most common cause of laminitis in the horse. Insulin dysregulation is a core component of equine metabolic syndrome. Management strategies for ID include feeding diets low in non-structural carbohydrates, but excessive …

Feeding protein supplements is advantageous because of a positive response in milk production. Rapeseed meal has given better production responses on a protein basis than soybean meal, but its supply is not sufficient to meet the requirements of dairy production. Red clover is one alternative to …

According to applicable legislation, manure and digestate must be sanitized in order to prevent disease transmission before they may be merchandised on the open market. Swedish plants currently have the choice between using one of two standard methods (70 °C for 1 h, or 52 °C for 10 h), or carry …

The rollback of insecticides exposes Swedish horticulture to a multitude of pests. Targeted and sustainable innovations are sorely needed. Here we target several pests of fruits, onion, cabbage, beans and salad and aim to develop 1) species-selective lures using a novel olfactomics platform, 2) use …

Fruit tree canker, caused by the fungus Neonectria ditissima, has become a threat for Swedish apple production. No efficient protective measures are available and no complete genetic resistance is known in apple. However, apple genotypes differ in the level of partial resistance which must be fully …

Healthy seeds are a prerequisite for sustainable food systems. The seed-borne plant disease, common bunt (CB) in wheat, caused by the fungi Tilletia tritici and T. laevis, is a major problem in agriculture. Efficient chemical seed treatments exist, but it is often difficult to keep up with autumn …
