Respiratory conditions is a growing issue in the equine industry and for horse welfare. Equine asthma is characterised by airway obstruction, chronic intermittent cough and mucus accumulation an impact the quality of life for affected horses. Similar to its human equivalent, equine asthma is a heterogeneous complex disease that is associated with both genetic and environmental factors. Despite extensive research the inflammatory processes underlying equine asthma remain incompletely defined. Hence, novel research strategies which lead to improved understanding of the cellular processes implicated in the disease is of importance. Here we propose to establish single cell transcriptomics for studying equine asthma at the level of individual cells and to create a comprehensive atlas of the cellular landscape in the airways of horses in health and disease. Ultimately this will lead to detection of new biomarkers, improved stratification of disease and more individualised therapy

Correct assessment of hind limb lameness is a challenge, also for most experienced vets. This causes incorrect diagnoses and faulty treatment interventions which lead to unnecessary suffering for the horses and an unnecessary financial burden for owners and insurance companies. The aim of this …

Icelandic horses are increasingly popular in Sweden and Norway. Their strength lies in their unique gaits, however, in lame horses this trait becomes a weakness. Evaluating not only lameness but also the leg of origin for lameness in any gait other than trot is exceptionally challenging. Today, we …

Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) associated with Culicoides biting midges is the most common allergic skin disease in
horses, seriously reducing welfare of affected horses. The main symptom is severe pruritus, with risk of self-infected
open wounds. The choice for treatment and prevention of this …

We aim to continue an ongoing study to increase knowledge of cattle locomotion on different floors, how they work in practice and what the long term consequences are for welfare and for farmers´ economy. For that purpose advanced biomechanical methods will be used to assess dairy cows´ …

The aim of this project is to investigate individual differences in the rate of passage of feed, feed efficiency, microbial flora and methane production in cows with different ability to consume large proportion of roughage.
Our previous studies show that methane production differs between cows …

Knowledge of disease development in wheat is a prerequisite for good advice on economically and environmentally
adapted control strategies. This project is based on knowledge from a previous SLF project about molecular detection
and spore traps, which showed that the different spore traps catch …

We are facing a protein shift in which a portion of the animal based protein in our diet needs to be replaced by plant proteins to reduce the climate impact from the food sector. Many agricultural by-streams contain high value proteins not used to their full potential. We aim to recover proteins …
