Grass for grazing or forage production contains variable amounts of carbohydrates, which often are described as the good (fiber), the bad (sugar) and the ugly (fructans) in relation to prevention, and development of diseases like insulin resistance and laminitis. There is a large variation in carbohydrate content in grass, and especially the content and digestion of sugar and fructans in grass is debated among horse owners. Furthermore, the fiber content and digestibility largely determines the energy content in grass and forage for horses, and is therefore of interest for both high- and low-performing horses. The aim of this project is to investigate the content of the different carbohydrate fractions in different grass species and to study their digestion in the equine gastrointestinal tract. This project will contribute with important knowledge regarding selection of grass species and harvesting or grazing regimes for different types of horses.

The conversion into a bio-based economy in Sweden requires a broad range of initiatives. One of the challenges is that additional sources of biomass will be needed. High yield potential, low conversion and production costs are critical success factors for new raw material. Salix is an energy crop …

The purpose of this project is to develop new non-chemical methods for control of different seedborne-and soilborne pathogens. Aerated steam treatment (ThermoSeed) is a modern and environmentally friendly method for seedborne pathogen sanitation, mainly used on cereals. We intend to develop the …

Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. …

Potato cultivars that are resistant to late blight and at the same time having acceptable other traits, have started to emerge. However, little of this material is used in Sweden and no organized and comparative table potato trials are done. Biological products against skin-finish diseases are …

We work with the vision that it possible to reduce herbicide use and completely abandon glyphosate in reduced and no-till systems by promoting soil health and crop vigour through a diverse crop rotation, cover crops and mechanical weed control. In field experiments, we compare innovative glyphosate …

The aim is to get basic data for testing impact energy resistance of stable fittings and building elements. The goal is to quantify potential impact energy of horse kicks in order to elucidate the implication of “sufficient strength to resist horse kicks”, which is a demand for stable fitting …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

Development of resistance to anthelmintics is a threat to equine welfare. As with antibiotics, restrictive use with anthelmintics in order to retain the effect is essential. Current recommendation for deworming is targeted selective treatment to individuals shedding a certain amount of parasite …

The purpose is to examine haylage 'intolerance' in horses, which is expressed as diarrhoeic faeces in some horses when they are fed haylage (sometimes also when fed hay). A typical appearance is two-phase faeces - one solid and one liquid. It is not known why or how this condition appears, and it …
