Heat stress is expected to be of major concern in Swedish animal production systems in the future. The air temperatures in parts of Sweden are expected to correspond to today's temperatures in southern Europe, where livestock experience heat stress today. Excessive thermal load affects the welfare and health of pigs negatively. Confined pigs have limited physiological and behavioural abilities to loose heat. In an effort to loose heat during warmer periods pigs often choose to lay on the cooler slatted floor resulting in pen fouling, increased workload, disturbance of the pigs' resting behaviour and increased agonistic behaviours. Pen fouling also has negative impacts on the air quality (ammonia, airborne bacteria and respirable particles). Floor cooling in pens for fattening pigs has the potential to enhance the thermal and gaseous environment in the fattening pig barns resulting in improved pig welfare, performance and health as well as the working environment.
Värmestress förväntas bli ett stort problem inom svensk animalieproduktion i framtiden. Lufttemperaturerna i delar av Sverige förväntas motsvara dagens temperaturer i södra Europa där produktionsdjur upplever värmestress idag. Bl.a. påverkar alltför hög värmebelastning grisars välfärd och hälsa negativt.

Structure liming on clayey soils (>15% clay) is one of the prioritized measures for mitigation of phosphorous losses to surrounding water. This project increases the knowledge about the effect of structure liming on phosphorous leaching losses on short and long term by investigating the timing and …

An alarmingly high number of accidents involve humans and horses and the welfare of many horses is compromised as shown by signs of discomfort specifically during ridden work. Research indicates that this is due to miscommunication between riders/handlers and horses and mismanagement caused by …

Diseases that can limit Swedish OSR production include clubroot, Sclerotinia stem rot (Ssr) and the recently escalating blackleg. Novel DNA-methods, based on qPCR and LAMP are used to detect and to further develop diagnostic tools to enhance food and feed production by providing site-specific …

Oilseed rape (OSR) is a profitable and important crop in Swedish agriculture, especially winter OSR which is cultivated on approximately 100000 ha each year. Cultivation of OSR relies on large inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, which has economic costs as well as negative environmental impacts. …

Effective communication between driver and horse via rein signals is essential for safety and horse welfare. Good driveability should at best reflect the absence of unnecessary harsh equipment. Yet, many trotters suffer from mouth lesions but associations with equipment, rein tension and motion …

Human athletes that perform strenuous exercise in cold climates have a high prevalence of chronic airway inflammation and airway hyper-reactivity. Cold weather exercise can also cause inflammation in equine airways. The Swedish Animal Welfare Act and the equine sport industry have regulations for …

Racing unshod improves the speed, but not all horses have sufficient hoof quality to run barefoot repeatedly without risking health problems. If measures of the ability to race barefoot based on routinely recorded data can be used as a genetic selection tool, it will improve animal health and …

The work in horse stables is commonly characterised by heavy and monotonous work, a low degree of
mechanisation and often outdated and worn facilities, and studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal
complaints for employees at riding schools. The objective of this study is to evaluate …

The amount and nutritive content of forages has major impact on equine behaviour, health, and disease. In the Nordic countries, forages for horses consist almost exclusively of grasses, and to a limited extent of legumes. Legumes contain more crude protein than grasses, hence locally produced …

The equine roundworm, Parascaris, is the major pathogenic parasite of foals, but has also been suggested to be involved in mild equine asthma (EA) in young Standardbreds. We intend to develop a serodiagnostic test with a saliva based sampling method for detection of early Parascaris infection. …
