Heat stress is expected to be of major concern in Swedish animal production systems in the future. The air temperatures in parts of Sweden are expected to correspond to today's temperatures in southern Europe, where livestock experience heat stress today. Excessive thermal load affects the welfare and health of pigs negatively. Confined pigs have limited physiological and behavioural abilities to loose heat. In an effort to loose heat during warmer periods pigs often choose to lay on the cooler slatted floor resulting in pen fouling, increased workload, disturbance of the pigs' resting behaviour and increased agonistic behaviours. Pen fouling also has negative impacts on the air quality (ammonia, airborne bacteria and respirable particles). Floor cooling in pens for fattening pigs has the potential to enhance the thermal and gaseous environment in the fattening pig barns resulting in improved pig welfare, performance and health as well as the working environment.
Värmestress förväntas bli ett stort problem inom svensk animalieproduktion i framtiden. Lufttemperaturerna i delar av Sverige förväntas motsvara dagens temperaturer i södra Europa där produktionsdjur upplever värmestress idag. Bl.a. påverkar alltför hög värmebelastning grisars välfärd och hälsa negativt.

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

The project will develop sustainable pheromone-based methods to reduce the damage from three moth species on currants, thereby enabling profitable cultivation irrespective of management practice. During several years, the currant cultivation has decreased in Sweden and also the yield per ha has …

Spread of barnyard grass, growing in southern Sweden has accelerated during the last decade and is rapidly moving northwards. No herbicide-resistant populations have been reported from Sweden thus far, but it is only a matter of time before barnyard grass will develop herbicide resistance in …

A sustainable use of phosphorus fertilizers has engaged a large number of researchers, especially how to measure
the soil content of available phosphorus. However, the development of results to useful methods for agriculture has
not been a priority. The recommendations are based on extraction with …

Oilseed rape (OSR) is a profitable and important crop in Swedish agriculture, especially winter OSR which is cultivated on approximately 100000 ha each year. Cultivation of OSR relies on large inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, which has economic costs as well as negative environmental impacts. …

This project aims to create a popular scientific review of the knowledge of using leys for horses, with focus on feeding, and based on existing research within the area. The target group is the horse industry in Sweden and the project comprise Nordic conditions. The project consists of three parts; …

Feeding protein supplements is advantageous because of a positive response in milk production. Rapeseed meal has given better production responses on a protein basis than soybean meal, but its supply is not sufficient to meet the requirements of dairy production. Red clover is one alternative to …
