The project aims to study the long-term effect of structure liming, and to test if minimum tillage can prolong the duration of this effect. The hypothesis is that structure liming effects diminish over time, but by minimizing soil tillage we can prolong this effect. Studies will be performed in six field trials, which started in 2014-2018. Studies of soil tillage effects (shallow tillage vs chisel plough) will be tested in Krusenberg (Uppsala). This trial has 12 individually drained plots with automatic leachate sampling. Tillage treatments (Chisel plough to 15-20 cm vs shallow tillage to ca 5 cm) will be included as main treatment and liming as a sub-treatment. In this trial, we will analyze losses of phosphorous and soil particles in water samples collected from drainage pipes, quantify soil structure on undisturbed soil samples using X-ray tomography and determine soil susceptibility to compaction. In all six trials, we will measure aggregate stability using turbidimeter.

The goal with this project is to increase the profitability and production efficiency on Swedish dairy farms by renewing
the genetic evaluation of the breeding value of temperament in dairy cows. We want to investigate if automatic
recordings of behaviour using SLU Gigacow on farm level can improve …

To grow with reduced use of glyphosate is of great concern driven by the requirements for integrated pest management, the risk of herbicide resistance and a potential coming ban on glyphosate. It requires balancing between environmental effects and impact on yield and economy. The project's goal is …

Effective communication between driver and horse via rein signals is essential for safety and horse welfare. Good driveability should at best reflect the absence of unnecessary harsh equipment. Yet, many trotters suffer from mouth lesions but associations with equipment, rein tension and motion …

Human athletes that perform strenuous exercise in cold climates have a high prevalence of chronic airway inflammation and airway hyper-reactivity. Cold weather exercise can also cause inflammation in equine airways. The Swedish Animal Welfare Act and the equine sport industry have regulations for …

Racing unshod improves the speed, but not all horses have sufficient hoof quality to run barefoot repeatedly without risking health problems. If measures of the ability to race barefoot based on routinely recorded data can be used as a genetic selection tool, it will improve animal health and …

The work in horse stables is commonly characterised by heavy and monotonous work, a low degree of
mechanisation and often outdated and worn facilities, and studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal

The amount and nutritive content of forages has major impact on equine behaviour, health, and disease. In the Nordic countries, forages for horses consist almost exclusively of grasses, and to a limited extent of legumes. Legumes contain more crude protein than grasses, hence locally produced …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …
