The project will develop sustainable pheromone-based methods to reduce the damage from three moth species on currants, thereby enabling profitable cultivation irrespective of management practice. During several years, the currant cultivation has decreased in Sweden and also the yield per ha has gone down here and in Finland. An important reason for this is insect damages, which are difficult to manage with existing and allowed measures. Up to 90% yield reduction has been recorded. We will use the odour signals (sex pheromones) to disrupt the mating behaviour, so that the number of ovipositing females and resulting damages are reduced to acceptable levels. The moths’ pheromones are known and the project group has previous experience from research on two of the species and from developing mating disruption for control of other insects. By connections to other projects, financed by EU and SSF, the possibilities are better today to produce the pheromone components at reasonable prices.

The conversion into a bio-based economy in Sweden requires a broad range of initiatives. One of the challenges is that additional sources of biomass will be needed. High yield potential, low conversion and production costs are critical success factors for new raw material. Salix is an energy crop …

All horses grazing freely are at risk of parasitic diseases. Due to a growing problem with drug resistance in parasites, there is a need to improve the diagnostic methods. One important problem with today's situation is that one diagnostic procedure costs significantly more than one treatment, both …

Climate change has brought about changing conditions for agriculture. In recent years precipitation deficit during the growing season has led to a shortage of forage in Sweden. During dry years, irrigation is necessary to achieve optimal yields. In addition, irrigation can bring about positive …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

Just going to the bathroom is contributing to algae blooms and climate change. Sweden alone releases roughly 15400 tonnes of N and 240 tonnes of P into lakes, rivers and seas, through municipal wastewater (including after treatment). Urine contains 80% of the plant nutrients found in wastewater and …
