Dairy cows are an important part of a sustainable and resilient food production as they facilitate circular flows on the farm and contribute to carbon sequestration, open landscapes and biodiversity. To achieve a sustainable dairy production in all parts of Sweden, we need large as well as small dairy herds. However, there is a lack of knowledge and adapted advisory services towards small dairy producers, whom often have a diverse production with on-farm refinements. For them to be a part of a sustainable food production, they need to be climate adapted and sustainable, with high biosecurity and good animal health, and we don't know if that is the case today. Thus, we will map sustainability and resilience in small dairy cattle herds with focus on biosecurity, working conditions, animal welfare, climate adaption and environmental impact. The results will high-light opportunities, obstacles and challenges for these farmers, and lead to increased knowledge and improved advisory services.

In the proposed project, we will explore the benefits of increasing the longevity of dairy cows under Swedish conditions by changes in herd management. We will focus on effects on methane emissions by modelling, using existing data from the Swedish Official Milk Recording Scheme and results from an …

Consumers appreciate onions in all kinds of cooking. Onions can be grown in Sweden with good results. Onions can be stored for a long period. There is a potential to increase the self-sufficiency in onions. To achieve this, a better knowledge of long-term-storage potential indicator factors that …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

All horses grazing freely are at risk of parasitic diseases. Due to a growing problem with drug resistance in parasites, there is a need to improve the diagnostic methods. One important problem with today's situation is that one diagnostic procedure costs significantly more than one treatment, both …

The sensory attributes of the raw milk are of major importance for the quality of the resulting dairy products. Since the early 90’ies, the so-called “blueberry off-flavour” has caused severe economic consequences for affected dairy farmers. The mechanism behind is still unclear, although forages …

Viral infections of horses have significant impact on animal welfare and can lead to huge economic losses. One of the first early signs of a viral infection is the development of fever and to at this early step be able to identify the agent behind the infection would lead to rapid and correct …

An alarmingly high number of accidents involve humans and horses and the welfare of many horses is compromised as shown by signs of discomfort specifically during ridden work. Research indicates that this is due to miscommunication between riders/handlers and horses and mismanagement caused by …

Improved feed efficiency (FE) is a key parameter for increased sustainability in modern diary production. The project aims to increase the efficiency of converting feed into milk and reducing the environmental impact of dairy production. In order for farmers and breeding companies to include FE as …
